Joomla Control Panel

As soon as you log in to the Joomla admin panel, you will be redirected into the Control Panel (Dashboard) screen. To access the control panel from any other page in the back-end, navigate to the “System > Control Panel” from the drop-down menu of Joomla Administrator Panel. It contains several default features and functions of Joomla to access through clickable icons, menu bars, etc. It will look like this:

There is a side-bar containing several options which are used to access several functions such as Articles manager, Media manager, Menus, Modules, Users, Templates, Configurations, and Extensions. Check out the following list explaining these options and their functions:


This section includes four options, as mentioned below:

Add New Article This option is used to create a new article page or content.
Article Manager This option is used to manage all the current articles.
Category Manager This option is used to add new categories. It also helps in publishing or unpublishing the existing categories.
Media Manager This option is used to manage all the files on the web-server. It helps in uploading new files as well as deleting the existing files. It is also used to create new directories on the web-server’s file system.


This section includes two options, as mentioned below:

Menu Manager This option is used to create custom menus and navigation of the website.
Module Manager This option is used to manage the location and function of the installed modules.


This part contains two options as given below:

Users It opens the user manager, which allows you to create/delete users, change passwords, language, and time. It is also used to select which WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor the user has access to. You can also choose or assign users to User Groups.
Urgent Requests It opens the Privacy Information Requests screen, which allows you to manage your urgent information requests.


It contains three options as given below:

Global It opens the Global Configuration, which plays a major role in the backend. If changes are made in the configuration, it will affect the entire Joomla site. Here, you can modify many options such as Metadata, Session settings, Server Configurations, and Time Zone, etc.
Templates It opens the Template manager, which is used to manage all the templates used by the website. Templates are the best way to styles screen.
Languages(s) It opens the language manager, which is used to modify the installed languages by setting one to be the site’s default language.


It includes the following options:

Install Extensions It opens the extension manager, which is used to add or remove add-ons. Extensions are a great tool to expand the functionality of the Joomla site. They provide capabilities to Joomla, which are not available by default. There are more than a hundred extensions available for Joomla.


This part contains two options as given below:

Joomla Update Status It shows the current update status for Joomla installation and used to open the update installation screen. When an update is available there, it will show the latest available version to update.
Extension Update Status It shows the current update status of installed extensions, if the extension has this feature from the developer. It shows the total number of extensions to update and used to open the installation screen.

These were the available options in the left sidebar under Control Panel. Except for sidebar, there are some other options available in the main area under Control Panel, which are as follows:

Latest Actions

This section will display all the most recent activities performed by the administrator. These activities include login activity and tracking, adding new articles, checking to contents, etc.

Logged-in Users

This section will display the administrators’ names who have logged into the Joomla Site.

Popular Articles

This section tracks the most viewed articles and put them in a sequence. An article having the highest views will be placed at the top of the list.

Site Information

This section includes all the details of the site, such as OS Name, version of PHP and MySQLi, Time, Caching, Gzip status, etc. It also displays the number of active users and the total number of published articles on the site.

Recently Added Articles

This section displays all the published articles as well as the current articles that have been published recently.
